A Stinky Story

On Mon while sitting on my couch helping my daughter with some homework I got a little whiff of.....well, I'll say stink. I asked my daughter if she passed gas but she said no mommy. I smelled it again, so I thought it was one of my cats. How could those cute little fuzz balls even let out something that smelled so massive. Surely they didn't have an accident on the rug under the dining room table. I was scared to look but I went anyway dreading having to clean it up. Fortunately nothing was there. Nobody else in the house seemed to smell anything. Then after about an hour my daughter said she smelled something stinky. Here we go again I thought, but couldn't find anything. Now keep in mind, the smell sort of comes and goes. Well, we all went to bed laughing at the story we've made up of a Fart Ghost in the house.
So yesterday when getting ready to do laundry (like when do I ever not do laundry) I opened the basement door to get a huge whiff of it. Now in the basement is where the kitty litter boxes are. Again I thought, wow, one of the cats really fired up the litter box. I almost dreaded seeing it. But that wasn't it. I got over to the side of the basement where the washing machine is and all the piping that leads to the sewage line and all the water lines. Well there was the problem. A leak in the sewage line. Imagine that.
I called my husband, because how do you clear that one up. You can't just replace a sewage pipe. It's a sewage pipe backed up with lots and lots of raw sewage, just waiting to burst the pipe. OMG, I can't do anymore laundry, this could be nasty. My hubby told me to call the town cause it must be backed up outside.
The townspeople were here in about 10 minutes ....whew. I watched from the window as they put the snake in the ground and hit something. To make a long story short, it's freezing here and something is frozen underground in the sewage line. The snake has pushed it along but not necessarily far enough away. Eventually it will move as it thaws but I don't see that happening anytime soon. The neighbors and I have vowed to use as much hot water as possible to help melt it and move it. Fortunately it's not costing me anything and there is no water spewing out of the pipe anymore.
That could have been tragic.
